Portable AIS

Vote 0 Votes

I've been searching and I can't understand why something like this exists: a portable AIS device that is basically like a portable GPS system complete with screen. Wouldn't you just need to integrate a portable VHF and a portable GPS with AIS software? Is there a legal reason these don't exist? If anyone knows of something like this, please let me know.

  • Sorry, but an actual AIS transponder is more than a VHF radio and a GPS, and fortunately the regulations are strict about how they're built (or it could be messy out there). There are special purpose portable and standalone Class B AIS beacons but they do not include receivers and display screens:

  • We manufacture portable AIS with WiFi and GPS on some models bu none have a built in screen. You can use them with laptops, phones and tablets with apps like OpenCPN though!
