HI All,
I have on my sail boat a Garmin GPS 585, and intend to buy a ST 1000 auto pilot for my boat. are they compatible?
Also as this is a sail boat, how do I ensure all elements can be steered according to wind direction.

Um, thats a pretty broad question:
Any GPS that outputs a NMEA 0183 or 2000 stream might be sufficient to give your autopilot a waypoint to steer to.
So yes they should be compatible.
To have it steered to wind direction, is a bit bigger question, and there's a lot that you have not yet told us.
What is the manufacturer and model of your wind instrumentation? (or are you seeking recommendations)
What kind of sailboat? tiller/wheel hydraulic/cable?
displacement full keel vs sport boat vs trailerable?
