N2k pulse/rotation counter

Vote 0 Votes

My centerboard has a 130 turns on lead screw to lower. Not really accessible to measure angle, and the screw follower moves about S meter. Any ideas on a means to count turns and translate to an N2k value ? Planning to feed a B&G Hercules, but the only pulse inputs are for speedos.

  • I'd use a small microcontroller to count pulses and convert that into a depth. You could then use a CAN controller to inject that onto the bus as a normal depth PGN.

  • Kees, can he use any of the PGN's around water or waste tanks, to then express centerboard as either the depth of fluid in a tank or % full/empty, that B&G would display?

  • Decided to use a "string pot" and attach a non corrosive lanyard to the board, going down the vertical trunk in which the lead screw resides. It will give a direct measurement of the distance moved by trailing edge swinging about the pivot point (moment) so that I can get the raw distance, or solve for sin-1(distance/moment) and express as angle.

Mechanical rigging and cosmetically attractive protection may be a bit of a trick.
