Hi, anyone uses their Ipad for chartplotter. I do understand it will not steer the the boat but just to give where you are and depth available under you.
I realise also an external GPS will be required.

I use my iPad for. Aviation using Navionics. I love the way it tracks your movement better than my old plotter did
There's tons of info on-line (including Panbo) and mag articles. Way too much to repeat here.
However, a note of warning - if considering using an iPad that doesn't have a built in GPS with an external GPS linked via Bluetooth (i.e. Bad Elf), the recent iOS 8.3 breaks that capability. It is a bug that Apple has acknowledged. In typical Apple fashion, the timeframe to fix it has not been announced.
