display eng hours on network

Vote 0 Votes

This is a pre J1939 engine. We want to leave engine gauges in the engine room and bring data onto the N2K network using a Maretron or Actisense device.

The operator wants to see engine hours at the helm where they keep records using engine hours as a reference.

How do I display engine hours remotely from the electromechanical hour meters? Am I stuck with just adding another meter?

  • Hi Tim,

The Actisense EMU-1 includes an engine hour counter and it shows on most NMEA 2000 instrument and multifunction displays. You can see one example here on a Maretron DMS250 but I also see the same engine hour count on Garmin and other displays.

There are two slight problems, though. You can't reset the engine hours in the EMU config program, so the hours are counted from EMU install. I'd like to add the hours that were already on my engine and I think Actisense could make that possible in the program.

The EMU also counts hours whenever it's powered up. You are suppossed to power it from the engine ignition circuit, but if you leave that circuit on it counts hours even if the engine is not actually running. I still my orginal Volvo Penta gauge panel installed and it only counts hours when the engine is running, not just when powered.
