Wind sensor for Simrad NSS 8

Vote 0 Votes

Our old Standard Horizon sensor looks as if it may finally have died. Is there something out there for which we won't have to mortgage the house which will transmit wind data to the new Simrad NSS 8 and have a nice usable display? I assume to get true/apparent wind you need a rate compass or similar?

  • Dan, I think the NSS will take any Wind data you can send it over NMEA 0183 or 2000. But I can't think of any low cost sensors, especially low cost, accurate, and durable sensors. Your best bet is probably the Simrad SimNet/N2K sensor though I think the NSS can apply calibrations to other sensors.

Don't make assumptions about True Wind on boats because the term is used for two distinctly different values. See main blog for more...
