I have a network of Raymarine ST 60 instruments connected through SeaTalk (original) to the Raymarine ST4000+ auto pilot. I just installed a new Garmin 740 with NMEA 2000 back bone.
I tried interfacing the two through the RM E85001 converter with no luck. It didn't seem like I was getting any power to the converter. I returned it to the toy store.
Anyone have any ideas of how I can get my Garmin 740 to talk to the original seatalk?
Consider using a seatalk to N2K converter. There is an entry on Panbo to learn more

The Raymarine E85001 seems to be a SeaTalk to NMEA 0183 converter. Is that really what you meant? The E22158 ST to STNG(N2K) converter powers off the backbone and should work fine. I've used it successfully in multiple configurations, including with a Garmin 740.
Is there a special cable to convert SeatalkNG to NMEA2000 that I have to buy in addition to the E22158? I can't tell from the pictures online if the nmea 2000 connector supplied will fit a garmin nmea2000 t-connector.
