Why did BR24 3G NOT see 200' Ferry 300' away in the fog?

Vote 0 Votes

OK, major kudo's to my new 3G (with Zeus 8) for picking up everything in the harbor including my trailing dinghy. But why in the middle of Long Island Sound in thick fog did it NOT pick up an approx. 200'x30' tall ferry approaching me from 90-degrees and crossing 300' in front of me - either coming, when it stopped or going??! Everything else except this massive structure was clear as can be.

Still waiting to hear an answer from Navico.

  • did you take any pics ?

  • That seems very, very strange, Michael, and I hope Navico will figure it out, or that it never happens again. But I'm curious how you got your hands on a 3G. I have a friend waiting on one and he's been told that they haven't arrived in U.S. warehouses yet.

  • Ben - I truly hope it was pilot error because this thing came out of the fog like a ghost. It had thankfully seen me and I could hear it. Radar had been on (4 NM range, radar mast mounted 10' above WL) and consistently picking up even the smallest of things afloat. My crew mate claimed a similar night time 'non sighting' of a passing tanker earlier but I dismissed it to his inexperience.

I was told by Defender that mine would be backordered until mid July. Miraculously it arrived a week ago today just in time for this trip home. BTW, I have to agree with a previous posting that Navico needs to give more thought to sailboat wiring configurations, especially radar mast set-ups with helm-mounted MFD's.

No, I didn't get a photo of the ferry as a backdrop to my radar screen. I was too busy soiling my shorts.

  • We just installed the 3G last week (replaced 24G) and will be testing over next weeks. I will report back if we see a similar anamoly. (hope not too)
