Marine speaker recommendations?

Vote 0 Votes

There are a jillion marine speakers in the West Marine catalog, but I have no way of knowing which if any of them are decent (read: sound good and don't corrode). Any suggestions from installers or satisfied customers would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Adam, I just took a pair of Bose 151 enclosed speakers off Gizmo's flying bridge. They sound good, and seemed to hold up just fine for the 2-3 years they were aboard (but I need more space for gadgets and have a pair of Fusion speakers I can panel mount). Here's what they look like (as Bose seems to have gone to a new design):

Whatever speakers you get, the way they're enclosed is important, I think. And if you want these 151s, I could make you a good deal ;-)

  • I have been very happy with my Poly Planar speakers I put in my salon on s/v Deep Playa. I have a set of their box speakers I plan to put in the cockpit under the dodger but they are being used as movable speakers for now.

I've also used their speakers on my scooter as well. Where they sit on the scooter they face directly upwards (i.e. exposed to the elements) and I've had no issues with them.

  • Ben, I never thought of using boxed speakers -- I was planning on flush-mounts, but that Bose looks nice. Want to send me pics of yours?

Patrick, I checked out PP's site and their stuff looks good but they don't make comparing products too easy. I'll do some exploring.

    Thanks!

  • Ben,

If Adam is not going to relieve you of your Boses, I am interested.
