Garmin 4000/5000 plotters - NMEA bridging?

Vote 0 Votes

One more Garmin question before I commit...

In the manual Garmin makes a general statement about bridging between nmea0183 and 2000. I would like to know if the plotter bridges all the sentences that it supports, including particularly DSC and AIS data.

Hoping that someone out there or Ben know the answer.

Thanks!

  • I got a reply from Garmin about this on my second attempt. In case anyone else is interested, here's what they said (slightly paraphrased):

The GPSMap 4012 is able to accept NMEA 0183 and then output that data via the NMEA 2000 bus connection but only if the Output Bridging option is set to auto or on in the unit configuration.

Only certain NMEA 0183 sentences can be converted into NMEA 2000. I have generated a list below to show the following NMEA sentences that can be converted in this manner.

    GPS- Position
    GPS - Satellite info
GPS - Course Over Ground/Speed Over Ground
    Heading
    Magnetic Variation
    Water Depth
    Water Temperature
    Water Speed
    Wind Direction/Speed.

At this point in time DSC and AIS data would not be able to be converted into NMEA 2000 from a NMEA 0183 source
