Mounting Maretron WSO100

Vote 0 Votes

I just wrote about this on my blog: http://www.deepplaya.com/post/Lots-of-stuff-on-the-masthead.aspx

Anyone actually mounted a Maretron WSO 100 yet on the masthead? How did you handle the Anchor light?

I remembered this post about the Airmar PB200, but the Maretron is HUGE (4.25" dia)
https://www.panbo.com/archives/2009/02/sailing_with_an_airmar_pb200_-_part_ii_.html

I'm thinking I might have to go to the Airmar since its smaller and thus more easily pole mounted off to the side (I'd go front)

Anyone have thoughts or actually done this?

Thanks,

  • I had also contacted Maretron and they sent me some pics of an actual install on a 1" stainless pipe bent to move the WSO100 out away from the light.

  • I've just removed all dead (ie all) instruments from my Ericson 35-II. I was planning on using the PB200 and am also trying to make sense of mounting options. Is there any reason to not mount one of these (WSO100 or PB200) directly on top of the tricolor? Weight won't be an issue, nor should added windage. I am possibly naive but I'm not sure what I would gain from going up vertically? I know there was talk about a Lopo light that had a threaded top mount on it. Has anyone out there tried this as a direct mount for an ultrasonic wind instrument?

  • That is an interesting mount! It is unnecessary to get that far away from the tricolor, but it is certainly an elegant way to do so (The 1" diameter pipe blocked only 10 arc seconds of visability on my tricolor when mounted just 3 inches away.)

A potential improvement, screw in an additional 12" extension and raise it well over the top of the masthead. If your going to use the same tall tricolor as an earlier picture, you want to get well clear of it. Also the more vertical you go the more you avoid an updraft from your headsail.

  • I saw the photos on the curved pipe and was wondering if this blocked the nav light fixture at your masthead? How is the Maretron WSO-100 working out for you? Would you recommend it. I'm told it will supply NMEA info to my Garmin chartplotter. What are you using? I planned to use repeater instruments to also show the wind info to a remote location of my cockpit area. Comments are appreciated.

  • The WSO100 and the extension pipe did not interfere with the visibility of my masthead light. That's why you want to get it out a bit away from the light.

The WSO100 worked great, but it did die at one point and Maretron did a warranty replacement. I'm not sure why it died, I suspect the board was damaged during the electrical storm season while we were in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Mexico (PV Area).

The WSO1000 will supply weather information. You would also need GPS and Compass instruments for a full chartplotter integration. If you are a Garmin guy they will sell you a total package at a discount. I was a PC guy so I built out my system without a chartplotter.

Both will work. Hope that helps.

  • Does anyone know of a replacement for the PB200 1" threaded adapter that has the cable slot out the side?

One too many gusts of wind Friday night snapped my adapter.
