Catamaran transducer installation

Vote 0 Votes

Hi, Does anybody have any experience with correct speed and depth transducer installation (Airmar for B&G 2000) for a cruiser/racer sailing catamaran?
The general reccomendation is - for monohulls - forward of the keel, but I am worried about aeration under the very shallow hulls here. The transducers will be less than 12 inches below the waterline.
The old installation - a mechanical Sumlog and NASA depth - was aft, but here you could get turbulence from the centreboards I would imagine.
Any information would be gratefully recieved before I start drilling large holes. . .

  • Place your transducers forward of the centerboard or daggerboards if they are on the centerline, or at the deepest point of the hulls AT SPEED, provided they are not within a 30 degree wedge starting at the leading edge of the boards. This could work if your boards are offset. Low velocity turbulence will not affect the depth sensor, but excessive crab angles will compromise the paddlewheel.

  • Sandy, That's very useful. Nobody has mentioned that 30 degree wedge before, but I see just what you mean. It looks like it has to be forward of the leading edge of the boards for me.
Thanks again for the very useful info.

  • That angle is a vague recollection of an old AYRS article. It would of course vary with wind loads and local disturbances at the blade / hull juncture.
