I am struggling as to how to wire up my new Raymarine AIS500. I assumed (incorrectly) that this unit would be "plug and play" with my existing Raymarine C120 GPS/Radar/Chartplotter, Raymarine ST 8100 Autopilot, and Raymarine Depthsounder all coupled by Seatalk. The only non Raymarine component is the Standard Horizon VHF with DSC, coupled to the GPS. I have assembled the AIS GPS antenna, coupled the VHF antenna, and attached the 12V positive and negative power leads to my bus bar. Now, I am left with 8 wires from the Power/Data cable. I have no idea as to how to incorporate them to my system. One electronics tech said I needed a Raymarine E85001 Data Interface Box (costing $135), but the Raymarine tech rep I contacted said I did not need this, instead I should use a Raymarine R08004 Nmea Input-Output Cable. I am confused. Can anyone help me through this last step?

I'm experimenting with an AIS500 myself, also in Camden! I'm mostly using NMEA 2000, which has its own issues, but I believe the concept for you is this:
1. Disconnect any 0183 wires currently going to your C120 and reconnect them to the two regular 4800 baud input/output pairs coming from the AIS500.
2. Connect the two high speed (38,400) 0183 data pairs (the orange striped ones) from the AIS 500 to the C120.
3. Go to the C120's setup menu and change the NMEA 0183 port from 4800 to 38,400 (aka AIS).
Everything should work as before, except you'll have AIS info on the C120. Look for "Gizmo" in the Inner Harbor this afternoon and call me on 16!
Thanks so much Ben. Great info which I will try. I did not get back to Camden in time to hail you on Gizmo. Hope to hook up in the future and see what you have done.

anyone got a wiring diagram for Raymarine ais 500 to skymate ?? there is no plug just a bunch of wires going out
Sorry, I'm surprised to see that the Raymarine site doesn't seem to have AIS500 manuals for downloading. There is some info here:
http://www.navagear.com/2009/04/10/raymarine-class-b-ais-with-multiplexing/
The bare wires are NMEA 0183 data connections; there is no 0183 standard plug or even standard wire colors. A pro with a volt meter might be able to figure out which wire pair is the GPS output that could go to the Skymate, presuming that's your goal?
Hi Ben,
Raymarine has the AIS500 in "Retired Manuals" -

I have an AIS500 with a Ray55 VHF that was installed with a E125MFD and an X10 Autopilot and launched in 2013. All worked correctly with the original owner. I have now updated the MMSI in the AIS and the VHF to my new allocated number however the unit is continually alarming with an "External Transmitter Fault". Transmitter Fault and Transmitter PA Fault. I have used the Diagnostic tool in ProAIS and can see the system indicates the the Transmitter is "Disabled"?? All other parameters look good. The VHF seems to be working fine.
Does the AIS have it's own transmitter or does it use the Ray55 as its external transmitter? What has failed here?
On a separate subject my Ray55 VHF has never had a GPS input and DCS activated so alarms every 4 hours. I have a Raymarine AIS500 cose by and would like to wire in the output from the AIS to the input of the VHF. The AIS has 2 sets of 4 NMEA cables One set has(White, Yellow, Brown and Green).
The radio has one grey and one purple wire only.
Can anyone help with the correct connection?
