Troubleshooting N2k

Vote 0 Votes

Hi all;

I have a N2k network comprising of components form Different vendors:

Lowrance 7300C HD Chartplotter
Lowrance 3000 GPS
Simrad IS-12 Depth/Speed
Garmin GMI-10 Display
Simrad TP-32 Tiller Pilot

Everything was fine at first. Now, the GMI-10 is not seeing the Chartplotter consistently. It will show up on the Garmin for a second, and then go away. Very intermittent. It sees everything else. A possible related symptom is the Chartplotter will not always correctly identify the GPS, often showing it as an Lowrance unknown device.

I have tried to simplify the network to just the GPS, Chartplotter and GMI-10, with the same results.

So how does the average user best go about troubleshooting these issues? I personally think it is the connector on the back of the Lowrance, but a call to them was not helpful, and I am not very interested in sending it back so they can keep it for 4 months, which they did with my Autopilot.

Any suggestions?

Chris

  • Chris, I think you're doing the right thing removing devices from the network and thus trying to isolate the problem. (Which is generally pretty easy to do with N2K). And the Lowrance's intermittent identification on the network suggests that the problem lies there.

    But have you double checked the integrity of your backbone? Two terminators in place and all connections tight? And, by the way, is the Lowrance consistently getting depth, speed, and GPS data?
