N2K and Lightning?

Vote 0 Votes

We are planning an N2K system on a new aluminum offshore cruising power boat that includes wind sensors on top of the boat, monitoring of engine parameters available from the engine computer and associated CAN bus (and lots of other sensors in between).
Since everything will be tied together by N2K cabling, I am worried that the cable will provide a path into the boat for an electrical surge from nearby lightning, I worry that it might burn through the entire boat (including the N2K optical isolators) and disable the engine at a critical time.
Does anyone know of a method of bridging two separate N2K networks via optical fiber (or even RF modems) so I can isolate the engine to avoid this type of issue? Suggestions welcome.
