Clarion CMV1, anyone tried one?

This handsome Clarion CMV1 was announced more than a year ago, but I missed it somehow, even though it does all sorts of things that I think could be great on some boats.  It can play DVDs on that 3.5-inch 480x234 pixel screen or output the video via RCA cable to a bigger screen, like an MFD that isn't doing much else when you're parked.  And it can do the same thing with iPod/iPhone video, though that feature mysteriously entails a special cable.  It even has an RCA input so you could use it to display an onboard video camera.  Of course, there's more...

The CMV1 also has an optional Bluetooth interface that will work with a fair number of phones.  And, audio wise, it can hook up to a Sirius receiver and tons of Clarion remotes, amps, etc.  But what I hope for when I come late to a novel product like this is to find reviews by people, preferably boaters, who've actually used one.  No luck.  CNET Reviews lists 5 star ratings at Amazon and Crutchfield but there don't seem to be any reviews at either site.  Meanwhile, the kids over at The Hull Truth had a great time slagging the CMV1's high price ($800 list) and arguing about marine stereos in general.  There's a bit of interest in that thread -- like references to Jensen marine DVD players and also a good looking one from MB Quart  -- but no one posting actually tried the high end Clarion.  I'm particularly curious about how well the CMV1's iPod (and iPhone) video feature works, seeing as Fusion -- which bet big on iPod/iPhone boat use -- is just now introducing video control to its stereos.  Has anyone out there tried one?

Ben -

We install them almost exclusively on our boats and find the customer reception to be quite well, It goes real well with the large monitor Navnet 3D BB installs in the bigger CC's like Intrepid and Sea Vee.

I haven't tried Clarion, but would like to hear from those who did. Although, frankly, after having iPod (docked) blasting out of teenager's room all day every day, I just want some peace and quiet on the boat.

We install these or the CMD6 and have no problems. They are a great a great match with any MFD that plays video. Great for kids if you want peace for an hour or two.

Thanks Glen and Mark! I gather then that the CMV1 screen is readable in sunlight and can take center console style abuse. Have either of you tried it with iPod/iPhone video?

I have the non-marine specific pioneer unit.

It has all the same features as this, but it is half the cost, probably just since it doesn't have marine in the name.

I have had this one for a year, using an external cable tv tuner while at the dock and love it. The only issue I have is it doesn't play back 100% of my DIVX movies, but it does do most of them.

bummer No Iphone compatability...

I'm not sure that's true, Thomas. If you dig around in the Clarion materials, sometimes they include iPhones, sometimes not. Confusing.

The CMV-1 works great with iPhone audio & video. The screen is small, but in most cases we hook them to a MFD. The screen can be shut off if you only want to view video on a MFD or monitor. The CMD-6 and CMV-1 have been very durable on center consoles. A great product that we dont have to worry about failing in 6 months.

Thanks Jay

I wonder why they (Clarion) don't list the IPhone as a "compatable phone". That's an oversight.

I would have made an assumption and passed on the unit..Now I will take a real hard look.

Thank You Ben for the review.

I have been using for a year and am very pleased with the unit. It has a ton of inputs and outputs, plays Sirius radio, music directly from my iPhone (digitally) , DVDs, USB memory stick music...

The 17watt rms amp per channel is puny, so if you like big sound (I didn't say loud sound), then getting additional amps is a necessity. Also the unit has so many cable connectors at the back that you almost have to give it an additional 4-5 inches of depth while installing...

All in all, very pleased with it and it's controls...
