COTS yes, Garmin on a Sub

I knew the Navy used some regular marine electronics and even has an appropriate acronym—COTS, for Commercial Off The Shelf—but I was still amazed to see a Garmin 2006 tucked amongst the massive jumble of gear in the control room of a 360’ U.S. nuclear attack submarine. And what the hell was I doing on a submarine yesterday? More later.

Wonder if USS San Francisco had a Garmin aboard when they hit that sea mount. Then again they were running submerged. Hmmm - that brings up the question if they are just using the Garmin on the surface or perhaps they are feeding it a position signal from an inertial nav unit and using it to plot?

Sharp eyes, Terry! Yes, that's a pair of Kenwood handheld radios hanging from the wiring, and the backside of another Garmin plotter to the right.
