Look, Ma, I'm blogging!

... written for Panbo by Ben Ellison and posted on Apr 12, 2005

BenPLandingL_smallBen Ellison here, pleased to introduce myself as the new editor of Panbo.com. Yme Bosma did a fine job of starting this weblog last year, and I’m pleased to report that he’s staying on to manage and grow the technology behind it. Between us, we hope to take advantage of this new medium to create a lively window into the fascinating and fast-moving world of marine electronics.

As for me, I’m a life-long boat guy — cruiser, delivery captain, navigation instructor, almanac editor, sucker for odd vessels, etc. etc. — who’s lived on the coast of Maine since buying an old 40’ wooden sloop here in 1971.  Nowadays I’m the Electronics Editor for both Power & Motoryacht and Sail magazines (who owns and enjoys both kinds of boats). I’m also an advisor for Marine Electronics Journal and write columns for Voyaging and Maine Boats & Harbors. I’ve watched yacht and work boat navigation go from RDF and celestial to satellites and PCs, and am enthusiastic to see where the heck the technology is headed next. Yme and I hope you’ll join us as a reader and/or contributor to blog about it!

Hello Ben....welcome! I have to say it was a lonely bunch of months with no new Panbo news, so I am pretty excited to see things back up and running again.

Hello Ben, Thanks for your great articles, even though I own a motor vessel, I tend to follow the electronic that are available and grateful for you sharing your experience. I see that Simrad is on your list of favourites, and request for an AP11 spare controller from you our your readers.
We had a 65kn storm in Richards Bay harbour and the fly bridge unit got damaged and swamped.
Failing that, could one convert a Nmea2000 controller via an actisense to nmea183 and connect it to the Simrad J300X? Have you or your readers carried out this connection successfully? Your input would be appreciated. Many thanks. John

Holy Cow, it's been nearly 13 years that I've been writing about marine electronics here, and the virtual pile of words, images, comments etc. has gotten gigantic.

That's why it's been darn scary to move all that stuff into a new "content management system." But Ben Stein was up to challenge and the new Panbo website has lots of promise, I think.

Please go to this Forum entry to have a peek and, better yet, go on to the staging site and return with feedback of any sort. Thanks!
